Appropriate audio ‘Money For Nothing’ by Dire Straits
Here it is — the first list of the ‘usual suspects’, ebaY user IDs who either lift photos from VDO fan websites or who violate agreements with wire service or movie or television websites for entertainment journalists or make copies of older authentic publicity photos and slides and digital photos and *REPEATEDLY* sell them on ebaY.
Fan Site Raiders: soup2nutzplus (has lifted from The Reel, someone’s wallpaper site and not surprisingly The Vault) is back at it, presumably legitimizing the auctions by offering the winning bidder a photo album (the last go around these photos were offered as hundreds of VDO images on a CD ROM, but now you can get them in groups of a dozen or so printed on paper plus with a mini album…excuse me while I stifle a cough …[fakes!]).
Hint to would be collectors: Authentic US publicity photos don’t normally measure 3″ x 5″ or 4″ x 6″ (or 8.5″ x 11″ which by the way is the standard size of a piece of paper, so be very wary of VDO photos that measure 8.5″ x 11″…cough [photocopy!])
Pro Site Raiders / Old Publicity Material Raiders: cbsbuzz (hint authentic vintage black & white 1980s TV photos from CBS usually measure 7″ x 9″ so why are this seller’s photos 8″ x 10″?), csguy1, et40, gdphotos, gigglegirl (admitted to me in an email that even her common black & white publicity stills are photographic reproductions she has made), moviemarket (a lot of autograph hounds buy their materials to be signed from Movie Market), rjbphotos, telejunky, theindianrunner202 and anything in color from tot43a although sometimes tot43a’s black & white photos are reprints too.
If you’ve bought from these sellers in the past, well I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but you probably bought a reproduction. If you haven’t bought from them yet, it would be wise not to start doing so now that you know better.
